Back when video game magazines (or really, magazines in general) were more popular, I subscribed to a few. As a child, I found gaming magazines to be quite cool, although oftentimes their strange, “mature” jokes went over my head. Really, they were attempting to target teens with faux edgy content. Now, there’s not many magazines out there unless you love Game Informer or retro collector-based ones. The children of today have even less options for reading gaming content that is tailored toward them. Little Player is an attempt to introduce kid-friendly content to both children and parents via a new magazine.
The concept is so simple that it’s amazing others haven’t attempted this before. Most gaming content available on websites and elsewhere is targeting a teen or adult market. For example, Game Informer freely reviews M-rated games next to E-rated ones, and gaming sites show a similar lack of discretion. Little Player is all about games rated EC, E, and E10+, ensuring that mature titles are not the focus here. You can check out their 20 page preview to see what they’ve got in mind. Games will be reviewed by adults, but also by children themselves. So far, there’s a very heavy Nintendo slant with coverage, but hopefully that’ll change with time.
Little Player intends to be a bi-monthly magazine released in both physical and digital forms. Considering children’s increasing focus on consuming content via tablets, I would have personally removed physical entirely. In any case, this is an adorable concept and a Kickstarter that I hope more parents discover.
