You know what I find heartwarming in regards to games? It’s that the mods of yesteryear are now the inspiration for other developers to create their own titles. Spellsworn was created thanks to a variety of inspirations such as DOTA and League of Legends, but developer Frogsong Studios feels closest to the “Warlock” mod for Warcraft III. So, what does that translate into? Well, it creates a top-down multiplayer title where players duke it out in a deathmatch. It just so happens that each and every player is a pretty awesome wizard.

Why wizards? Well, because they can cast spells, of course! This means that battles are full of flaming fireballs and other magical volleys being lobbed between everyone. Dodging is important, but so too is keeping track of spell cooldowns. You don’t want to be left in a tight spot with all your spells recharging. Spellsworn also takes a tactic from sumo wrestling in that players cannot exit the “arena.” The only problem is that the arena itself gets smaller and smaller as lava creeps in. One thing to note about this release is that it is planned as free-to-play. The developers haven’t indicated how this will work specifically, but are opposed to pay-to-win schemes.

Spellsworn requires $25,000 in funding and hopes to entice backers with tiers devoted to exclusive in-game items and titles. The game was previously Greenlit meaning that they’re already set for a Steam launch when ready. Just note that the upcoming Early Access release will be paid even though the final game is free-to-play. They plan to use Early Access as another form of development revenue, which explains this choice.
