steelwavesAs gamers we spend a lot of time talking about “dead genres.”  Game types that seemed to flourish in our younger years but now seem hard to come by, especially if you care about quality.  Talk all you want about the adventure, JRPG, or sports manager genres; None of those can hold a candle to the dearly departed naval sim.  Silent Hunter, 688(i) Hunter/Killer, Fleet Command, Harpoon; all are classic games in the genre, and fans rightfully weep when they notice that Wind Waker is classified as a naval game right alongside them on Wikipedia.

But fear not!  A small studio out of the UK that goes by the name of Game Tonic is looking to do their part to make things right.  Earlier today the team launched a Kickstarter campaign for their WW2 era naval simulator Steel Waves.  Sure, the gameplay footage in the funding video looks very rough, even when you consider that it’s an early alpha, and there isn’t a screenshot to be found, but at least they’re making an effort!  Before passing judgment on whether or not you’re going to back Steel Waves check out the gameplay footage below.  Sure, it’s still early, but least there’s some lighting and texture work going on.

Game Tonic is looking for a mere £10,000 to help make Steel Waves happen, and they’ve given themselves until March 27th to make it happen.
