Welcome to episode five of “Nathaniel Gives Things Vague Titles and then Explains Why They Make Sense but They Don’t Really”. Today we’ll be talking about Tyto Online, an upcoming MMO being developed by Immersed Games. Aside from the entire dev team inexplicably wearing Star Wars t-shirts, the group’s main focus is education, and following form, Tyto Online is an education MMORPG. Usually, when kids and MMOs mix, parents get credit cards stolen, but what if there was an MMO that your mum wanted you to play?
The entire concept that Tyto Online is built on is a sound foundation for an addictive approach to learning. Many of the developers at Immersed played World of Warcraft at some point, as many of us did as well. The main thing about MMOs is the addictive nature of always being close to an achievement of some sort. You’re about to level up, so you play a little longer, then you’re about to finish a quest chain, so you play all damn night. You also learn the names and stats of a ton of different weapons. You memorize raid layouts, planning each enemy encounter carefully. Anyone who knows who Leeroy Jenkins is can relate to the incredible amount of knowledge that makes the difference between utter failure and great success in an MMO. Well, the folks over at Immersed are planning on harnessing that addictive gameplay for education, and instead of memorizing raid layouts, we’ll be memorizing facts that are useful in the real world.
There’s so much more information that we can’t cover here, so if you’re interested in this experimental and intriguing method of educating kids in a variety of topics from 3rd grade to 12th, go visit Tyto Online’s Kickstarter campaign and start your learning off by reading about the game’s plot and memorizing some gorgeous artwork!
