When I first played OBEY it was an incredibly confusing experience. However, after a bit of explanation, and actually entering into a match, it quickly became a very neat multiplayer experience. Unfortunately, it seemed this cool concept didn’t quite translate via a Kickstarter pitch as the crowdfunding campaign was unsuccessful last year. Developer Daniel Dez didn’t let that stop him, though. He has continued working on the game and launched an Early Access version this week.
Now, quick note, this isn’t Steam’s Early Access program but just a term used to specify an early release build available for purchase. Before this the only way to get access was to back the Kickstarter. OBEY can now be purchased via the Humble Store for $17.99 or as a 4 pack at the discounted cost of $37.99. This release is different from the one months ago as it includes a tutorial, text commands, chat lobby, and a Spanish localization. All of these features are appreciated, especially the tutorial which is a definite necessity for new players.
What’s still missing from OBEY to keep it in “early access?” The biggest addition is probably some sort of in-game chat, which the developer recognizes as important. Right now you have to setup an outside chat source with your friends (Skype, Ventrillo, etc) before jumping into a game. Chat commands do help a tad with this since it allows players to issue commands without a mic at all. In any case, it’s great to see that OBEY is still in development after the Kickstarter campaign.
