You know, some visual novels really are wish or fantasy fulfillment. Dating sims, in particular, tend to create worlds where every possible person you might be interested in romance with has the potential to respond in kind. So, what happens when you enter a world where everyone is already dating someone else? Apparently the fantasy becomes to take their boyfriend from them! Okay, so maybe the logic is a bit weird, but that’s basically the premise of Boyfriend Stealer which just launched on Kickstarter.
Players step into the shoes of Shanoa, a college student who was just kicked out of her previous school because of her attempt to seduce the dean’s daughter’s beau. Undeterred, she resumes schooling at another college. Sure, she’ll study hard and learn some new things, but all that “stat grinding” is in hopes of being better prepared to separate the boy(s) she likes from their romantic partners. It’s all very outwardly manipulative, and doesn’t particularly make Shanoa seem like a nice, likable person, but that may very well be the point of Boyfriend Stealer. I’m sure some folks out there would love to play a visual novel where they actually get to orchestrate interpersonal drama between other characters.
The developer is asking for approximately $3,079 (converted from AUD) to turn Boyfriend Stealer from concept to reality. So far, there’s not as much interest as there has been toward other recent Kickstarter visual novels, so hopefully folks are just shy. The game has also gone live on Steam Greenlight in case you feel like upvoting it.
