Retro seems to be all the rage these days on Kickstarter between remakes, sequels, and games inspired by the classics. Mad Gear Games is taking on the latter in their homage to the glory days of the NES with A Hole New World. Side scroll and shoot your way through two worlds as you take on the evil minions of…evil. And perhaps save the world or something. I don’t know. The main point is you get to shoot stuff.

A Hole New World

Anyway, the basic story of A Hole New World is that the land was filled with bad and evil things that made the goddess who made the world sad. To be happy she split reality into two realms: the good and the bad. Nobody wants to talk about the ugly. With the bad guys locked away in their own world peace reigned, she was happy, and everything was good and just. Blah, blah, blah. We all know how this ends, don’t we?

A Hole New World

Yep. The evil has started to escape into the land and it’s up to the “Potion Master” and his fairy companion to traverse between dimensions to kick the proverbial behinds of the bad guys back into the hellish plane where they belong. Master your alchemical abilities and lob them at your foes. The most unique part about the gameplay in A Hole New World, though, has to be in the way the “holes” react. When you’re jumping down them you’re not landing in a pit or anything but rather an upside down land that you can use to your advantage.

A Hole New World is inspired by the classics such as Mega Man and Ghouls ‘n Ghosts with some Castlevania sprinkled in, and the retro look of the artwork and music show. If anyone wants to relive the glory days of the early console market you should definitely check this one out.
