[dropcap size=big]A[/dropcap]ll right. I’ll admit it. I suck at shooting girders and giant pipe sections out of a gun. But that doesn’t mean that I didn’t have fun playing through at least the first couple scenes of Bootleg Systems. Which is a first person game that takes the concept of using a tool as a weapon a la Portal and bumps it up a notch. BAM! Unfortunately, I couldn’t get very far. Let me tell you why. It’s because I suck at using the clone gun. Pure and simple.

Bootleg Systems

Aside from being able to pump out giant pieces of construction equipment from a gun about the size of a modern rifle the other major draw of Bootleg Systems would have to be the graphics. I mean, it screams post modern neon laser grid…stuff. It’s kinda hard to describe, but it has the whole Tron motif set to groovin’ synth music. Anyone who grew up in the ’80s can certainly appreciate that part of the game.

Bootleg Systems

Despite being horrible at landing the girders and pipes at ledges to continue on I still had fun shooting them around randomly and seeing what carnage I could cause on the empty landings. My favorite would have to have been cloning a road cone and just rapidly shooting them into the ether. Like a demented construction worker I just kept cloning and shooting until the gun emptied and then I cloned some more.

I may not have gotten very far in the Bootleg Systems demo but the half hour or so of just running around like a crazed maniac with a gun and jumping to my death on more than a few occasions was still fun. I just wish I was a better shot to make it to the end. Still, if you want to take it for a spin yourself you’ll have to wait a couple days before they put the links up on the Kickstarter page.
