I’ll admit it. I’m a “brony”. Well, technically I’m a “pegasister”, but I do enjoy the My Little Pony franchise. Because of this love, I decided to take a close look at Sulphur Nimbus: Hel’s Elixir. This is a flight based game featuring a hippogriff as she discovers the mysteries of an island she finds herself on. There are some heavy pony inspirations based on what I’ve seen so far.
One thing that I have to give the project creator credit for is addressing the big pink elephant in the room. Hasbro hasn’t been exactly generous with crowdfunded projects like this. I’m sure Sulphur Nimbus: Hel’s Elixir won’t be hit with the proverbial “banhammer”, but it is risky to put up one that instantly screams MLP to me.
Mysterious Origins
Even though I do see Sulphur Nimbus: Hel’s Elixir as a genuine attempt to get a passion project funded, there are some problem areas that I found. For starters, we don’t know anything about the one-man team behind the game. What are his, or her, credentials? They’ve stated they have 15 years of, but what projects have they worked on?
In addition, we know very little about Sulphur Nimbus: Hel’s Elixir itself. We know it’s a flight game featuring an obvious homage to My Little Pony. We know the setup but no story beyond that. There is some gameplay shown in the pitch video, but how it works isn’t explained. It does look like a great game, but there’s so much information missing. There’s also the potential cease and desist from Hasbro.
I do hope that Sulphur Nimbus: Hel’s Elixir makes funding. If it does get made, I might give it a second glance when it releases. For now, though, there’s too many red flags to back this one.
I’ll come out and outright state it. I’m not a fan of “flight games”. I could never get into Starfox, for instance. That said, the artwork looks great. However the similarities to MLP and the lack of pretty much any information has me wary about this one even coming close to funded. And then there’s the potential backlash from Hasbro. I’ve seen other related projects get taken down because of this.
Honestly this one looks pretty ugly to me. It reminds me of the commonly used SFM pony models, which I only felt the fandom used because there were no other alternatives.
