Please don’t hate me for this video. I made my points clear, right? I made a pretty good case, right? I even put on the mask and wig like you asked! What more do you want from me?
Today’s video takes a look at nostalgia on Kickstarter, a big topic considering that’s pretty much all Kickstarter is anymore: a perpetual nostalgia machine. So many projects are sold and marketed on the return of a long dead genre, a long awaited sequel, a spiritual successor, or as a game that just looks or plays like others. Those are the campaigns that find the most success, leaving more unique and original games with almost nothing because they don’t come with the same guarantee of comfort and familiarity.
See? I told you you’d hate me.
No matter what you may think of me, I will always love you.
I love your greg accent! But i think you missed one kind of nostalgia game that i absolutely dislike lol. Retro games! those games with 8-bit graphic T_T. It triggers the nostalgia of people who played those type of games..(i played them and i don’t regret the improvement in graphics!)
Hm, as how far nostalgia go..i didn’t back banjoo nor bloodstained..i backed shenmue because i never played one lol same goes for wasteland..i played wasteland first a bit before playing WA2. I backed megaman for my brother..(he’s a fan)
Back then i was playing sierra games and interplay. So Corey Cole was Nostalgia..(Pillars of Eternity and Torment too) i backed chris roberts while hating simulator plane..(it was for the hype..)
I backed Wasteland 2 as well, but simply because I was swept up in the hype of Kickstarter. That was after DFA came and it was still kind of a new thing back then, and I couldn’t help myself. Its funny, Once I got the game in my hands I hated it.
I didn’t really get into gaming until around the PS2 era, so I don’t really have much in the way of nostalgia when it comes to gaming, honestly. As I mentioned in the Yooka-Layee CAT video, I miss 3D platformers, but that genre is legitimately dead except for a few Kickstarters, and I don’t want any one game back so much as I want new ideas in that genre.
Well, truth be said, what i do miss on the sierra and interplay kind of games isn’t the “type” of game, you know. It’s the compelling story-telling. I am not sure if that could be categorized as a nostalgia trip..i don’t really care for a 3D isometric view or another king quest..i just want a powerful story (i like reading a lot lol). Torment was a good example it had a lot of philosophical question, the game was quite deep..people writing video games sucks so much nowadays..(on a general note some are good ut they are exception..) i can’t get into it anymore.
Good news, I learned how to spell!
Here’s the thing. I broke my teeth, so to speak, on Kickstarter based purely on nostalgia. My very first project was Leisure Suit Larry just because Al Lowe and Josh Mandel had returned. Same with Moebius, SpaceVenture, and later on Hero-U. I backed a lot of adventure games through a combination of nostalgia and just a pure love of the genre. Is nostalgia being overused? Probably. But, honestly, I don’t mind it. It got me some great adventures, even some that really tried to move past the traditional gameplay and do something unique.
