[dropcap]A[/dropcap]s someone who was, at one point, limited to playing games exclusively on an iPod Touch, I can say without a shadow of a doubt that touchscreen controls don’t always work as well as we’d like them to, especially for things like platformers. The problem is that a D-pad doesn’t translate well if you can’t actually feel it under your thumb, so Super Adventure Mega Quest, currently seeking funding on Kickstarter, gets rid of the D-pad entirely to bring you what the developers call “perfect platforming touch controls”.
Super Adventure Mega Quest is a self-proclaimed love song to the genre of platforming and will take you on a journey through the generations with every level. You’ll start out with monochrome Gameboy graphics and move your way up, one heart at a time, until you’re strutting around in full-color HD listening to one of the game’s excellent tracks. The controls are unique and sound like they would work pretty well. The scheme cuts out the D-pad entirely in favor of simply allowing you to tap the left side of the screen to change your direction and the right to jump or double jump. Aside from that, it’s simple platforming gameplay. Collect things, jump on bad guys, and reach the end of the level.
Super Adventure Mega Quest is currently seeking funding on Kickstarter to the tune of $20,000 with a planned release on iOS, Android, Kindle, Mac, and PC. Stretch goals include console releases and a wealth of new gameplay modes and levels. Currently being developed by Soler Pictures Inc., it’s Super Adventure Mega Quest.
