If you’re a fan of gaming and have never heard of Ludum Dare then I highly suggest you look into it. Effectively, it is a game-making competition that happens regularly and often tasks developers with creating games in very short time frames. Basement was initially devised during Ludum Dare 29: Beneath the Surface and drew a lot of attention from the community. Because of this, the team at HalfBus have decided that they should flesh out and finish the game with the help of Kickstarter.
Basement takes strategy games in an interesting new direction. Instead of commanding troops or aliens or whatever, you’re tasked with managing a growing drug empire. All of this goes on underground, underneath a store that serves as your “front.” By building new and larger rooms you can create more and more of the drug of your choice. Of course, you’ll have to staff the building along the way, making sure that you have suitable security to keep things in check. Bribing police before inspections is another way to cover your tracks – as long as you’ve got the cash. Those who loved Breaking Bad or Weeds and always wanted to play a game version may find Basement scratches that itch.
Despite the fairly serious subject matter, Basement has a fairly lighthearted style. The pixel art is chunky and dare I say cute. It also appears to avoid more depressing aspects of drug trade, similar to how Prison Architect or The Escapists boils down prison life into simplified, fun game mechanics. HalfBus are asking for $15,000 to fund Basement on Windows, Mac, and Linux.
