More zombies, brains, and guns, courtesy of Monochrome Games and their slightly unusual Kickstarter campaign for Contagion.  See, Contagion is essentially done, and by done they don’t mean “We totally have a 20 page design doc ready!”  The game is currently in closed beta and has an October 25th release date on Steam all set. In fact, you can watch people play it daily on Twitch.tv.   So what’s the funding for?  A vacation for the team?  Perhaps a booze and drug fueled launch party?  According to the developers :

Some people are confused why they shouldn’t just wait till our Official Release on Steam to purchase a copy of the game. Well, those who pledge on Kickstarter for $15 (or more) will receive all previous tiers and some exclusive in game bonuses. Another incentive is a head start to play the game before the official release date, once Kickstarter money is approved. Please read the F.A.Q. for more information regarding this.

With this money we plan to put it to the following uses:

  • Cover various engine/license fees (engine, sound tools, software licenses, etc.)
  • Expand our initial reach with marketing
  • Server costs (you need somewhere to play!)

Seems reasonable.  And if you look at the Kickstarter campaign as a way to get the game a little early for $5.00 off then it’s a decent deal.

The Contagion Kickstarter campaign runs until October 13th and has a funding target of $50,000.
