Few retro games garner as much respect as the Contra series; with their over-the-top gameplay, insane difficulty levels, and near flawless shooter design; they are the pinnacle to which many developers strive for. Due to the series’ influence, it’s not unusual to see multiple Contra type games on Kickstarter at a time, some more promising than others. Well what we have here is one of the promising ones; it’s Bullet Bros from Jason Stokes.
Jason explains that Bullet Bros is heavily influenced not just by Contra, but by Super Mario 3, Bionic Commando, and Blaster Master. That right there should sum up what Bullet Bros is all about, side scrolling co-op mayhem. It’s got dozens of vehicle types, grappling hooks, some hilarious looking physics, off the wall bosses, some really unique co-op elements, and a ton utility items. So far everything is wrapped up in a graphically beautiful package that would make some big name studios green with envy.
Take a look at the Gun Bros Kickstarter page and check it out for yourself, the funding video has plenty of gameplay to look at, not to mention the great looking concept art further down the page. Jason is looking to raise $80,000 by December 6th to help with various aspects of the game such as network coding, another programmer to handle console ports, a game designer to create more levels, and a community manager to tell people their ideas are really good while keeping a smile on their face.
