girl genius1Girl Genius and the Rats of Mechanicsburg is one of the bigger Kickstarter success stories out there, if not for total funding, but for how much the original target was smashed.  In December 2012 the folks at Gizmocracy asked a mere $7,500 to make a mobile game based on the very popular steampunk Girl Genius web comic.  They ended up getting over $100,000, undoubtedly due in no small part to the popularity of the web comic, as well as the variety of backer rewards that fans of the comic would kill for.

For the past several months backers have been getting antsy, asking if the game was anywhere in sight and asking “…is this now an official money pit / souvenir stand?,” as one backer put it recently.  The good news for everyone involved is that according to an update from earlier today Girl Genius and the Rats of Mechanicsburg has officially entered Beta.  This is a big step for the developers as well as the backers, and it means that backers that pledged $250 or more should have access to the game in the next few days.

No word on when the full version of GGatRoM(?) will be available, but it looks like it’s heading in the right direction.
