I actually laughed a bit while reading GalaxyTrail’s latest update on their upcoming retro platformer Freedom Planet. The post was actually a bit of a sad one for those who staked a heavy claim in Freedom Planet coming out this month, but for those of you who have no idea what this is, do yourself a favor and check it out, because the release date and price tag have been confirmed (or just read on, because I’m about to tell you all that good stuff). What made me laugh was the extremely rational reasoning behind the delay: Steam’s Summer Sales, otherwise known as Wallet Decimation Month, are still going strong, and releasing the game right now would be suicide.
We all know how crazy the Steam Summer Sales are. They’re complete madness, you can get Skyrim and Far Cry 3 for $5 each right now, and that’s just the mainstream surface-scratching half of it. Almost everything on Steam that didn’t just come out is on sale, and Freedom Planet doesn’t want to get buried under all that. A very smart move on their part, and although the final release date has been confirmed as July 19th, I think this is a very good sign for the community. First off, the game will be front and center on Steam once the sale is over, so the game can get the recognition it very much deserves. It also won’t be a hassle to reach or load the game’s page once the sale is over, and people who’ve spent all their money (so, all of us) need a couple weeks to save back up after having their wallets leveled. So, all said and done, Freedom Planet will be released on July 19th via Steam, it’ll cost $14.99, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
