The team at Pardis Game Studio love comic books. It’s because of this that they’ve been working on a game inspired by the likes of Sin City and The Boys for two years. The Dark Phantom is that project and is a third person shooter with a definite noir comic vibe. The game stars “The Dark Phantom” – a man who has no memory of his past and a heavily burned body. But as he’s stuck in a criminally-run city, he must persevere, fight, and discover the truth.
As far as indie games are concerned, The Dark Phantom is immediately visually impressive. Whereas many other developers focus on pixel art or simple polygons, they’ve got a fully realized 3D world taken care of. Sure, graphics aren’t everything but it’s refreshing to see independent teams try for all types of graphical fidelity. The cast of characters, from The Dark Phantom to the many criminals in his path, all have distinctive comic-like character art as well.
With that said, there is at least one aspect of the campaign that is hopefully not indicative of the final product. The Kickstarter page itself is littered with grammatical issues. This is hardly a death sentence as Pardis Game Studio simply needs to get a skilled English writer on board. If they don’t, The Dark Phantom could still very well play and look great, but a sub-par script would unfortunately tone things down a notch.
Making their $50,000 CAD goal will allow them to finish The Dark Phantom for Windows PC. A Mac version is squirreled away at the $180,000 CAD stretch goal, with consoles (PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360) at $450,000.
