Looking for a cool campaign to back that still needs a little support? Check out The Incredible Baron. This title calls itself “reverse tower defense” and has an amusing concept at its core. Players take on the role of the Baron, a man set on exploring the world for scientific endeavors in the 19th century. As such, his means of exploration and discovery are more than a little questionable. He’ll find local creatures, add them to his team, and then utilize them to destroy tons of enemy bases along the way.

This all plays out from a 2D perspective where you watch your animals battle the opposing force’s defenses. The art style itself has a cute 16-bit aesthetic which turns even the meanest monsters into cuddly, bright creatures. As you progress through The Incredible Baron you will gain more animals (over 40 in all) and can experiment with the tech tree to make even more discoveries. If this all sounds enchanting to you then I’d suggest giving the demo a shot. Please note that it is a Windows-only demo, which reflects its intended final release plans.

The Incredible Baron is currently targeting a release on mobile platforms (Android and iOS) alongside a Windows 8 launch. At the moment developer FlatRedBall Studios have also promised to keep their game out of iffy mobile practices territory by avoiding “premade DLC and deceptive in-app purchases.” Their Kickstarter requires $8,000 in all to succeed and is currently nearly 80% of the way there. Along with a game launch, a successful campaign will also allow the developer to provide their FRB engine to curious creators free of charge.
