Finch is a bit of an odd creature. He is somehow both frog and human, and this has left him as an outcast from the other frogs. Even so, he became one heck of a cocky creature and is the “chosen one” who will fulfill a prophecy and save all his amphibian brethren. That’s the setup for the game Mongrel which is currently seeking funding on Kickstarter. What kind of game is it exactly? It’s described as a Metroidvania title, although so far there’s not too much displayed of the game to know too much more.
Concept art on the campaign page shows some really gorgeous concept visuals, however the actual trailer reveals that Mongrel is poised to be a pixelated 2D game. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with that! It’s particularly amusing to see protagonist Finch in all his anthropomorphic frog glory, wearing a jacket and wielding guns as if that’s completely normal behavior. The trailer reveals some of Finch’s special abilities as well, such as using his tongue to “grab” onto platforms and ride them along. My hope is that far more ridiculous scenes are present in the game. As the developers drew inspiration from Conker’s Bad Fur Day it seems basically guaranteed.
As with most other Kickstarter campaigns, Mongrel has launched a Steam Greenlight page which is still open for upvotes if you’re so inclined. The Kickstarter itself is asking for approximately $10,182 (converted from NOK) to facilitate a Windows and Mac release. At the moment, they’re trending to succeed, but definitely require more attention to keep funding up.

did a blog about this game i love a metroidvania type game but thought the concept art looked sooo good but the actual footage left me a bit disappointed
There are so many Metroidvanias out there, it’s ridiculous indies. But I do like the looks of this one. Has a very “Wind of the Willows” look about it, thanks to the Frog main character and the brown-ish, storybookish color palette.
