The 7th Guest was one heck of a point and click adventure game from the early 90s. With its then gorgeous pre-rendered 3D backdrops and FMV actors, it proved a popular title which spawned the sequel, The 11th Hour. Unfortunately, over the past few years, developer Trilobyte Games have been unable to successfully crowdfund a third game in the series. That’s part of what makes the story of The 13th Doll surprising. You see, it’s not designed by the original team or even the IP holder of The 7th Guest.

Instead, it’s marketed purely as a fan game which takes place ten years after the original. Trilobyte Games is completely fine with this and are even endorsing the project themselves! However, their licensing deal stipulates that The 13th Doll must be a truly high quality release, and that requires a tidy sum of funds. A great deal of the Kickstarter funds will be used to pay for excellent actors, high quality video recording (for FMV sequences), and generally turning the project into something even greater than this indie studio could create on their own funds. As for the game itself, it will change up the Trilobyte Games formula by allowing you to play as one of two characters (with different puzzles and such for each).

The 13th Doll has a goal of $40,000 for release on PC. That’s not bad, considering what they need to get accomplished, but the previous failed funding attempts for an official The 7th Guest 3 do create a bit of worry. Interestingly, the last attempt raised a little over $40,000, so here’s hoping fans turn out in force to at least ensure this loving fan game gets its chance to shine.
