Several years ago I came across an interesting looking action adventure title by the name of Giants: Citizen Kabuto. Deciding to give it a shot I loaded up the disc and instantly fell in love with both the humor and gameplay. Especially the humor. And now we get treated to more crazy shenanigans in the same style via First Wonder, a spiritual successor to both Giants and MDK. And I very much look forward to seeing more.

First Wonder

In First Wonder you get to play as both a group of wise cracking humans known as Cargonauts (reminiscent of the Meccaryns in Giants) and the monstrous Monstro (reminiscent of Kabuto). The game starts off with the Cargonauts salvaging an awesome looking fossil of a brute and deliver it to the resort planet of Majorca. Little do they know that they just royally cocked up things by releasing Monstro upon the populace. Oops.

So, what do they do? They take on the brute, but they can’t do it head-on. Monstro’s too powerful and they’re just squishy bits of flesh to be trod on. They have to use their wits and set traps, use technology to their advantage, and do whatever they can to undo the damage they caused on the peaceful populace. Monstro, on the other hand, is out to fulfill some sort of prophecy. Just what that prophecy is beats me, but he’s hellbent on fulfilling it. And doesn’t care about the insignificant insects buzzing around his head.

First Wonder has all the makings of another indie classic by the same people that worked on Giants and MDK. While I haven’t yet played the latter title, I know that I couldn’t get enough of the weird and insane story of Giants. And we’re sure to be treated by the same madness here. They’re asking for a hefty half mil, so they’ve got a long road ahead of them. But if anyone deserves to be funded it’s these guys.
