The longest journey of Zoe Castillo and Kian Alvane continue in the fourth book of Dreamfall Chapters as they work to unravel the mysteries surrounding the two worlds of Stark and Arcadia and how it all relates to the surreal border world of Dreamtime. A lot of revelations bubble to the surface and while some questions are answered the path is a long one fraught with peril, danger, and more questions. In fact, there’s a lot here to take in and only those that have been following the story to this point will be able to follow what is going on.
The latest episode for Dreamfall Chapters follows Kian as he infiltrates the magical camp run by the Azadi to learn just what the people in charge are up to and Zoe finally tries to track down the First Dreamer, Lux, to save everyone and everything from falling into eternal darkness. You know, just normal stuff for a normal person. Of course, neither of our heroes is going it alone. There will be friend and foe alike, some in the least likely of places.
The subtitle for the fourth book, Revelations, lives up to its name. There are many secrets revealed, both for good and for ill, that will have a much lasting impact in the final installment of the series. We’ll see returning characters not just from earlier in Dreamfall Chapters but also from the previous two games. Including some recap from a former necromancer regarding his tussle with a certain April Ryan and the fan favorite Crow (the wisecracking black bird that’s pretty much the mascot of the series).
One thing that I really love about Dreamfall Chapters is just how your decisions affect the overall plot. Book four continues the tradition by showing players just how their choices have had a lasting impact on current events. And, just like in real life choices made as far back as the beginning both ripple and wave through events both present and future. What may have seemed like the right choice at the time might have drastic consequences down the line. When playing Revelations I found myself plenty of times regretting what I thought was the best decision only to find that I may have made a major mistake. Friends can end up dead and villains triumphant by the time the credits roll at the end of book five.
Dreamfall Chapters continues to prove that Red Thread Games can craft an epic adventure with an epic scope and Revelations shows just how much love they’re willing to put into the continuing saga of two disparate worlds connected to form a Balance of magic and science. Throughout the latest episode you continue to get closer not just to the primary players but also the secondary characters as the fate of everything literally hangs on the decisions made by unlikely heroes. The stakes get higher, plots unfold, and choices made mean the difference between life and death…light and dark…balance and ruin. I just can’t wait until the final book is released just to see how things end up on my own journey. The longest journey.
