After successfully funding their tabletop occult high school RPG back in 2014, Liberi Gothica Games has continued to expand the Breakfast Cult universe. With expansion packs still in the works the team has returned to Kickstarter to bring backers a new way to play.

Seeking $18,938, the new Breakfast Cult is a mystery visual novel with cosmic horror themes. Following in the footsteps of its predecessor, the story will take place at Occultar Academy. A magical high school focusing on revolutionary occult science. What could go wrong?

As it turns out, plenty for our protagonist, “Pinky” Pinkerton. A reformed delinquent, Pinky has been offered a second chance by the ever watchful Foundation. As if having the school’s surveillance happy Headmaster breathing down their neck wasn’t enough, there are some bizarre happenings at Occultar Academy. Bizarre enough to force Pinky to risk expulsion to unravel the dark mystery’s of the school and survive until graduation.

A New Kind Of Game

Liberi Gothica is counting on some of their tabletop game creation skills to transfer over to this new spin-off. Despite the difference in development, it certainly doesn’t hurt to have a proven track record of art and narrative abilities to bolster the confidence of potential backers. This makes it a little odd that the campaign wasn’t launched under the Liberi Gothica Games Kickstarter account. Instead the project was launched by the game’s author, Paul “Ettin” Matijevic.

Another potential stumbling block for the game is the lack of detail on the campaign page. There aren’t many examples of the sprites or backgrounds. There also aren’t any examples of how choices will play out in the game. Returning fans may readily overlook this, but new backers who are unfamiliar with the series might want a little more information before pledging.

Backers will have the choice of PC, Mac, and Linux versions of Breakfast Cult at release. Development will take place throughout 2017 with the game’s launch planned by the end of the year.
