What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear Orion Trail? Well, if you’re anything like me, you might have thought “The Oregon Trail” (or Orion Burger but that’s beside the point…) This computer classic was treacherous but enjoyable thanks tot he fact that it basically let kids play games at school. Orion Trail by developer Schell Games certainly channels the difficulty, but does so with a distinctly tongue in cheek vibe. The game feels like it emerged from a generation not because of its pixelated visuals but thanks to the irreverent humor oozing from every digital pore.
You’ll take the captain’s chair of the Indestructible II and try and keep your crew happy (or at least functioning) for as long as possible. As this is space, there’s all kinds of awful and/or hilarious things which can occur to the crew. Some examples on the campaign page include a disease which causes someone to sprout tentacles while another scene showcases green warp weasels which have infiltrated the vessel. What do you do? In every situation you’re given a choice. Beyond this, there’s also the need to manage various resources on board. Run out of food and you probably won’t be successful for much longer.
So far Orion Trail looks like a lot of fun, but thankfully the developers have also put together a playable prototype for folks to test out. Give it a shot and see if the game is up your alley. Schell Games is hoping to raise $90,000 to release Orion Trail on Windows, Mac, and Linux. And yes, it was already greenlit via Steam.
