When a game suggests it’s “Zelda meets Don’t Starve” folks simply have to pay attention. Those are exactly the first games used as comparison for Deadwood: The Forgotten Curse which has just landed on Kickstarter. Developed by Steamroller Studios, this looks to be a very unique take on the survival/strategy zombie genre. You see, in the realm of Knottington most everything seems to relate to wood. Protagonist Lathe is made of wood (but also a great young inventor). Even the zombies, or deadwood, are wooden beings hungry stealing sap from the living.

An interesting mechanic in Deadwood: The Forgotten Curse is utilizing its day/night cycle effectively. During the daytime Knottington looks lovely and is completely safe to explore (thanks in part to your large buddy Roguard). Unfortunately, Roguard falls asleep at night which is when the deadwood come out. You’ll need to effectively collect items during the day, craft them, and then fortify a base at night to survive against incoming hordes. Barricades, turrets, decoys, and even land mines can be crafted to give Lathe an edge. As your defenses wear down it’s possible to fix them up, although don’t let them get completely torn down!

With charming visuals and enjoyable sounding mechanics it seems that Deadwood: The Forgotten Curse is poised to do well. The Kickstarter campaign is asking for $65,000 in total to facilitate a Windows, Mac, and Linux release (but ports are possible). Here’s a link to their Steam Greenlight page if you feel like giving the game an upvote.
