Recently, long-time developer Tale of Tales revealed that they were no longer pursuing commercial video game production. Although they ran a successful Kickstarter for Sunset, it failed to attract much attention from the gaming populace after launch. This huge misstep caused the development team to reevaluate their work and decide that they were not going to make games for the “mainstream” any longer.
With that said, they never said they were done utilizing Kickstarter or other funding avenues. They’ve been running Patreon pages for a bit now but it looks like an upcoming project is going to require a fair bit more funding. In their latest backer update Tale of Tales revealed they are planning a Kickstarter for a “new, surprising project!”
As a fan of their work, I’m definitely excited by what may be coming. They have not specified anything about said project, though, so it may not even be a video game. After all, they’ve created non-game art before and continue to. We should expect to see their campaign go live sometime in October.

Whatever it is, there going to have an uphill battle no matter what, they burned some bridges in a very public way; either way it should be interesting.

There’s nothing wrong with artistic games but Sunset had a mediocre story and poor (nearly non-existent) gameplay. It simply wasn’t very good and the poor sales reflected that.
Tale of Tales were also very petulant in response to criticism. Some basic PR training would go a long way to mending bridges. Let’s see if they can step up to the challenge.
The story wasn’t mediocre it was overtly terrible. Toward the end, about the time the protagonist rants that the U.S. military manipulates young black men into the Army for the purpose of getting them killed in war, and that it’s better for them to be pimps and drug dealers, I kept playing, jaw dropped, to see how agonizingly horrible the developers’ opinions could be.
Samyn and Harvey have the juvenile politics of a liberal arts college undergrad who just read A People’s History of the United States for the first time and had their minds blown. They don’t have the discipline or intelligence to put their stupid ideas into a book or film, so of course they’ll keep making games. Because making a bad game filled with dumb ideas is easy. The Path of least resistance. And the Belgian government will keep handing them sacks of cash to do so. And the games press will keep patting them on their stupid heads and tell them they’re doing “important” work, because the small-developer game industry and its associated “journalist” scene is a damn clown car.
These people just want to make interactive essays. Their perfect game is walking down a hallway as a Malcolm X voice actor reads their college thesis about “Problematic Adventure Time Overtones.”

They likely lack the technical ability to move to any other studio, not that any would hire them after the drama following the Sunset implosion. Job search probably hasn’t gone as well as they expected, so in a choice between SJW fed kickstarter and fast food, they’re going for a kickstarter.
I expect a, “#GamerGate is sending me death and rape threats! … Donate to my kickstarter”, followed by a ton of clickbait articles showing some twitter egg accounts spouting nonsense to be their main form advertising followed by a slew of victim buxs.
After all you don’t have to actually have a good product these days to make money. You just have to point to people on the internet calling you names and cry misogyny. Even if **YOU** were a jerk, lied repeatedly and/or treated others like garbage first.
Sticking to that would require integrity and a spine, both things these jellyfish lack.

I feel a bit sketchy on this myself. I’m kind of hoping they don’t try and come back with a game because the shitstorm around that would be insane. But, it does feel kind of dirty that they’re going to do a Kickstarter in addition to their dual Patreons. Is the Patreon to help pay their bills, but the Kickstarter is to pay for whatever project they’re going to work on? Ehhhhhhh

These were the people who kept saying how capitalism was utterly evil, and since then they have been asking people for money in one way or another.
