Work on ReVeN is not going well. In fact, developer Austin Morgan of Varia Games has just posted an update to the project’s Kickstarter backers explaining that the game won’t release until an unspecified date in 2017.
He goes on to blame a variety of things, such as the developer’s decision to start working on another game called XBridge, costing Varia Games both time and money. Morgan justifies this decision by telling us the $33,008 successfully raised through ReVeN‘s campaign wasn’t really enough to make the game, and so Varia had to find another way to bring in money. The answer was Xbridge, on top of a pizza delivery job. Backers must be thrilled to know that Morgan spent $2,500 of ReVeN‘s funding buying a car so that he could deliver pizzas every weekend.
Morgan reassures backers that Varia Games picked up a lot of skills working on XBridge that will benefit ReVeN‘s development. However, is that enough to soften the blow? Backer reactions are mixed. Some are pleased at Morgan’s honesty, having accepted the risks, while others are a little peeved at how ReVeN was essentially put to the side while the developers worked on another game, and are disappointed by the delay.
I feel like the biggest problem here is poor planning. If $33,000 wasn’t enough to make ReVeN, then Varia should’ve tried to raise more to begin with. Being successfully funded is only a good thing if you have enough money to actually make what you’ve promised.
At least the game is still being made. That’s one thing for backers to hold onto. For more on ReVeN, check out the game’s Kickstarter page for updates, and stay tuned to Cliqist for future coverage.
