I love games focused around local multiplayer, but they’re unfortunately few and far between. That’s why I’m looking forward to BFF or Die. BFF or Die is a puzzle game about a group of time travelling aliens who get lost on Ancient Egyptian Earth. The players have to guide them through a series of mazes, collecting energy to refuel their time machine.
The single-player reminds me of Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. One analogue stick controls the character in the maze, while the other controls the character in the time machine. But BFF or Die was built with several players in mind, and that’s where it really shines. Supporting up to four-player local co-op, two more players are thrown into the maze, while another controls the ship. Players in the maze push buttons and avoid enemies to collect the fuel before returning to the time machine. Players in the time machine aid the players in the maze, lighting up paths, and stunning enemies.
The base mechanics are simple, but deep enough to keep each maze feeling fresh. Later levels introduce new mechanics as well. The player in the time machine will be able to pick up friends or enemies with a giant hand, for example, and ghosts that can travel through walls are introduced as enemies. There’s already a lot to love, and I can see it becoming a great title with some funding and a bit more time.
BFF or Die is looking for £15,000 in donations to release in May next year on PC, and hopefully PS4, Xbox One and Wii U. There’s a demo to download (always a good sign for Kickstarter), with plenty of content already available. BFF or Die is definitely one to keep an eye on for some simple local multiplayer fun.
