My generation had a bit of an issue back in the day when Pokémon was first introduced: we knew all about the different Pokémon in each generation, their counters, the most efficient build, you name it. But when asked about various creatures in the animal kingdom, many of us were coming up blank. Conservationists were highly concerned by this issue and wondered if fantasy creatures were just more interesting to children and starting to replace real life animals.
That’s when Sjors Jansen took it upon himself to put together AnimalAlbum, a game with many of the RPG elements the Pokémon games offer but without much of the kidnapping animals and forcing them to fight one another (Pokémon is a little dark! Come on!). AnimalAlbum is intended to restore interest in the animal kingdom, both from children and even the parents.
The game itself is oriented around exploration and learning about the different animals in the habitat. As a robot, you’ll need to go out and take notes on the wildlife you discover. There are plenty of people to interact with and mini games to play to learn about animals. Encounters are no longer thrust upon you, there are signs that imply an animal is near and the player has to go to it.
AnimalAlbum doesn’t necessarily need to be a solo game. There is a co-op option for two players to even work together on the same computer. One person as a robot, the other as an animal. It’s intended to bring together parents or students and teachers in the learning process.
The AnimalAlbum Kickstarter campaign is live now with a funding goal of €18K. The conclusion of the campaign will be June 4th.
