CivCraft, A Promising RTS/FPS/RPG Mash-Up

When I first read the tagline for CivCraft I thought the premise was going to fall flat from the start. After all, it’s not often that you see a first-person RPG melded with open world RTS gameplay. But, after looking at the pitch as a whole I can actually see this working. And it all starts off with world building concepts like building your kingdom from scratch. But I’m getting ahead of myself.

All right. So, what exactly is CivCraft? From a story point of view, you play as the leader of a clan from another dimension that goes to the plane of Ellaria to build and maintain your own empire. You start your reign one building at a time, recruit others to your side to fight and work for you, and you go about making your kingdom prosper.

But, not all is peaceful in the land. Aside from your standard monsters gallery that you would expect from both RTS and RPG games you’ve also got to contend with the other clans come to stake claim to the land. It’s up to you how you decide to deal with them. Diplomacy or outright warfare. It’s your choice.

Anyway, back to the disparate gameplay. In CivCraft you’re not forced to play both if you don’t want to. Build up your forces and send them out to battle in the strategy side of things or you can go out on your own questing for phat lewtz and glory in the RPG half. Or do both. And based on what I’ve seen the transition is pretty much seamless. What should not work looks like it will. And, as they say, you can have your cake and eat it too.

Apparently I’m not the only one who thinks this is worth seeing the light of day. As of this writing CivCraft is already over halfway funding with a month still to go.
