The era of atmospheric exploration horror games is upon us, and as such it can be harder to stand out. With that said, Perception stood out to me immediately. Yes, it’s a narrative horror adventure where the protagonist isn’t armed with heavy weapons, but there’s one massively unique aspect – Protagonist Cassie is blind. She has found herself haunted by a strange building in her dreams and believes that exploring it is the only way to be free. As such, she discovers and enters the Estate at Echo Bluff, but finds that a terrifying Presence doesn’t want her to ever leave.
Cassie may be blind, but she is anything but an easy target. Using echolocation via her cane (and ambient sounds) she is able to paint a mental picture of the surrounding environment. Players can utilize her cane at will, but also don’t want to make too much noise… lest the Presence be notified of her location. Using wits and cunning, players will (hopefully) be able to avoid deadly encounters, explore the history of the home, and make it out alive.
The concept of Perception is incredibly cool and comes to us from past developers of games such as Dead Space and Bioshock. I’m personally hoping that “brand” recognition so to speak will push The Deep End Games toward their goal. After all, even with an awesome concept, $150,000 is a lot to ask for on Kickstarter. Perception is planned for release on Steam at the moment but does not have a Steam Greenlight campaign yet.

This one does look like an interesting take on the genre and I wish them the best but I agree that six digits is hard to get these days.
Well 50k over 150k with 27 days left..it seems pretty well engaged. I like the concept myself..but i am in for almost 1k this month..can’t back all!
It’s been one heck of a month with crowdfunding projects! Haha, would you mind sharing some of the ones you backed lately?
This month i backed..Umbra, Oak Island, Thea (hope it’ll make it), Monsters’ den: godfall, Starlight vega, Herald, Brilliant Shadow, No one but you. I also rebacked This is Police at the 150$ tier 😛
I was almost on every campaign on the higher tier..Besides, i gonna broke my wallet again for Bard’s Tale 4. I was on Yooka-Laylee but had to gave up..i also gave up on the little devil inside..I must be at 750$..without BT4 which i’ll probably throw another 200$+
I am mostly into VN/Adventure/RPG games.
Definitely some solid choices in there! Out of curiosity though, why did you back out of Yooka-Laylee?
Well greg, it is my opinion that Yooka-Laylee is trying to achieve too many things without a clear view on what they actually want.
First of all do you remember the scope of Banjoo and Kazooie? (because the game seems to take more after this one). Those games were memorable for the gameplay but in my memories for their scope and secrets and how it was had to get/find them.
I just don’t think they have enough money to realize a game worth Banjoo & Kazooie. They need at least 5M. Also, while the stretch goals came in i realized how dull, repetitive and unispired they were (I mean free DLC..a lot on Multiplayer..Commentary..the rest are normal stretch language, console release, Linux etc..) Which didn’t reassured me on my first impression.
That it was a disappointing take on B&K and DK. When you’re trying to revisit a genre or a previous work, what is the most important is how you can improve it, keeping the same spirit (keeping the same pot using a new recipe) reinvent yourself. I don’t see anything new there.
For exemple Mighty 9 seems a great take on Megaman. While keeping the same idea you can see how the creator reinvented himself. Yooka& Laylee give me the impression to be a portage of Banjoo and Kazooie for the present generation of players. Not a new inspiring game for everyone to enjoy.
You might think that KS is all about nostalgia not bringing new genre but if you played those project done on KS that have been released you might have realized that while bringing back some genre that have been forgotten they are all trying to bring something new to it.
I just don’t see it there.
[…] course, this is pretty much stuff we already knew thanks to our previous coverage. But, what has been happening since the project launched? Not a whole lot, actually. While there […]
