I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not a fan of miniatures battles games. A couple friends tried to get me into it a few years back and while it was a fun diversion it just didn’t capture my interest as much as other tabletop games have. That said, I’m not above at least checking out interesting takes on this style of gameplay and with Wartile this brings the whole concept from the tabletop to the desktop. Whether it works or not remains to be seen but there is a demo to try out if you’re on the fence.

Wartile

Anyway, Wartile blends miniatures battles into a digital space. Each fight is between two (or possibly more) armies facing off against each other on a hex-grid field complete with elevation and terrain to be used against each other. Also included are decks of abilities that you can use to supplement their stats during battle. Basically, anyone familiar with mini battles should be able to pick this up pretty quickly.

Wartile

The artwork stands above most other strategy games in that it actually looks like an animated miniatures battle. Even the figures look like they could have been store bought. Which might be a selling point to some. Right now it’s just Vikings versus the English, but I wouldn’t be surprised that if Wartile becomes popular enough it might break into other genres like horror or sci-fi. I’m not sold on the game as it currently is, mostly because of my aversion towards this style of tabletop game, but if there was to be an expansion featuring Cthulhu and his ilk (for instance) I’d give it a second glance.
