There are platformers coming out constantly and yet we rarely see ones focus so heavily on verticality like Jumping Flash did over ten years ago. Considering that is one of my favorite PlayStation games out there it is quite annoying to me! Thankfully, it seems that others noticed as well. Hurricane Fighter Plane Studios are currently working on the game Fantastic Journeys, which fully embraces the classic Jumping Flash style of platforming.
Players enter the dreams of a young boy which is where all gameplay takes place. Because of the story framing, this means the world does not have to mirror reality in the least. From the screenshots provided in their Kickstarter we can see that rolling hills have cotton candy trees, floating platforms, and hot air balloons because a dreamscape can be anything! Each level tasks folks with reaching a goal (one that’s likely high in the sky) but you’re free to explore the unique landscapes and discover some secrets. If all the levels look as creative as the one presented heavily via Kickstarter then it’ll definitely be worth wandering through them.
Are you someone who has never played (or heard of) Jumping Flash and need a taste of the gameplay? The developers have a one-level prototype you can check out right now. So far there is no mention of a Steam release for Fantastic Journeys, but stretch goals open up the possibility of Mac, Linux, PS4, and Xbox One ports. Fantastic Journeys is asking for $5,000 on Kickstarter to pay for licensing fees and equipment.
