It’s really exciting to see how so many great game ideas are born during game jams. Threshold is one such title which was initially devised for the Global Game Jam of 2014 – here’s a link where you can play it. However, that spark of creativity didn’t die as soon as the jam did. Instead, the developers became attached to the creation and decided to turn it into something far more fleshed out. In conjunction with QuadraTron Games, the name behind Monsters!, they’ve taken to Kickstarter to create a re-developed version of Threshold.
Their game is a puzzle platformer with a neat mechanic. As a cute little character named Hood, you’ll have to jump around through seasonal landscapes of Summer and Winter that shift depending on your position. For example, if the protagonist faces right then a certain seasonal world will be on display. Turn left and a different world will appear! Basically, you’ll have to keep track of which way you’re facing to make the right platforms, keys, and other objects appear or disappear at just the right time. All of this is rendered with some lovely 2D visuals that are soft in tone and painterly.
Those interested in giving Threshold a boost can pledge to its substantial funding goal of $47,000. In order to reach this, QuadraTron Games have instituted a 59 day campaign so hopefully this works in their favor. There doesn’t appear to be a Steam Greenlight page either. In any case, the game is poised for Windows, Mac, and Linux release with a possible port to Android and iOS later on.
