By now it should come as to no surprise that I’m a fan of card games, particularly of the collectible variety. So, when I heard that there would be another hybrid game coming soon to Kickstarter I had to check it out. While we know very little about the plot and gameplay for The Great Whale Road it does look to have potential as a card game and turn based RPG combo. While I usually shy away from naval games I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to see what’s already being shown off before the launch later this month.
The Great Whale Road takes place during the Middle Ages, around 650 AD to be more precise, where you’ll be tasked with traveling along the coast of the North Sea in the signature ships of one of several historical tribes. There is plenty to do here from pillaging, pirating, trading, and pretty much anything that you can think of in a maritime game set during this time period.
From the sounds of things you can customize your character in several different ways and these choices affect how the game plays out. The Great Whale Road uses a deck of cards to represent heroes, crew, and other officers to make sure that your ship is always manned. And a leveling up system makes these cards more powerful as you gain experience. Just exactly how these play out remains to be seen but they’re promising a demo for when the Kickstarter and Steam Greenlight campaigns launch. Which I look forward to trying out to get a feel for the game.
The Great Whale Road is scheduled to go live on November 17, presumably on both platforms at the same time. Once it does launch we’ll make sure to spread the news and any new information that might be provided in the pitch. Until then, you’ll just have to wait.
Hello – Joachim from Sunburned Games here. What we will release into the wild during the Kickstarter will be a development ‘taster’ for two-players to match their crews against each other online featuring the basic features of our combat functionality. This is the foundation on which we are building the combat functionality for Early Access (EA is planned to start in May 2016). More on Tuesday!
That sounds awesome. I look forward to trying out the multiplayer combat prototype. 😀
Hi! Our Kickstarter is live: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/sunburnedgames/the-great-whale-road and the combat prototype is just around the corner.
