I’m a sucker for a good romance tale, especially one that has some pretty deep themes like trying to fight fate and destiny in order to make one’s own path. In the case of Wingdaria Destiny this seems to have plenty of both which is why I have to wonder why I didn’t back it the first time. Anyway, while I liked the concept I wasn’t quite sold when the second campaign launched. Which is why it’s a good thing that a demo came along to help me decide. And it certainly helped my decision even if I’m still on the fence about going above a buck.
The demo for Wingdaria Destiny is quite short, being only about a half hour long, but while there’s not a lot there you do at least get a good feel our the playable protagonist Evan as he struggles to apparently find both his place in the castle as well as his feelings for Princess Aria. Despite being blind, he certainly seems to handle himself pretty well. Which is probably more than I can say if I were in his situation. Anyway, I’m not sure exactly where in the narrative this all happens but I doubt it’s at the very beginning as all the characters you meet certainly seem to know you to some extent.
We already know thanks to the pitch that Evan and Aria love each other but her betrothal to a neighboring prince has them both uneasy. This brief exchange at the beginning of the demo shows how they feel for each other but perhaps duty and station are fated to tear them apart. Plus, it’s not like the others in the castle show any real sympathy towards a blind boy pretty much doing nothing while staying there. It’s harsh and I found myself really feeling for him by the time the demo ended.
Despite being short, the Wingdaria Destiny demo does impress and shows that they’re willing and most likely able to deliver on their promises of an ill-fated couple trying to find their way in life and just how they feel towards each other. Whether they’ll be able to actually get the funding they need to finish the game, however, is a question that doesn’t look easily answered. With three weeks left on the clock they’ve managed to get about a third funded but as we all know anything can happen.
Their asking price of about $15 is about average for a game of this scope so it’s not much of a stretch to dig too deep if you like this kind of story. And after playing the demo I’m most certainly tempted to go up to that level to find out how our couple fares in the end. Whilst I’m still deciding it’s worth noting that the demo is good enough to at least start to push me off the fence one way or the other. And it’s worth playing even if you don’t back now. Hopefully one way or the other they’ll find a way to finish off Wingdaria Destiny even if they don’t get the money now as I’ve already fallen in love with the characters seen so far.
