Last year an intriguing new tactical RPG hit Kickstarter by the name of Graywalkers: Purgatory. Despite a very information-filled pitch, the campaign was simply unable to reach its $100,000 goal. After regrouping, getting through Greenlight on Steam, and preparing to secure additional funding from investors, Dreamlords Digital are trying one more time! So far it seems that this attempt at raising $40,000 will be successful.
So what is Graywalkers: Purgatory? It’s a game in the vein of classics such as Fallout and X-Com. By that they mean it is a top-down strategy game with turn-based battles. Of course, beyond the mechanics, it also looks like the storyline will pull from the likes of Fallout and Wasteland. It takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where occult creatures (werewolves, vampires) and demons coexist. The coolest aspect of this to me is that they’re not just enemies – you can create a character who is a vampire, werewolf, human, or something else! Each character class has their own skillset as well.
One aspect of Kickstarter that Dreamlords Digital hopes to utilize is really getting backers into the game. Via their “crowd content” initiative they hope to accept content that users generate for the game. This open door for mods seems intriguing, although it may make the game feel less unified in theme and art style. It really depends how this stuff gets implemented. Right now Graywalkers: Purgatory is in a pre-alpha state. Once an full alpha is prepared they intend to get on Steam Early Access with a Windows, Mac, and Linux build.
