Space exploration/simulation games continue to arrive in the MMO space which makes it increasingly difficult to differentiate between them. Despite all this, there are still many features that the majority of these games lack. Enough so that developer Fluffy Kitten Studios is able to address what’s lacking in other titles via Ascent: The Space Game. In this game, you’ve not only got an outrageously vast space to explore, but also a variety of aspects to keep players engaged.

Some of Ascent’s highlights include planets that rival the size of Earth and our moon. Yes, as in full scale in-game planet models being that vast. Players can colonize these planets as they see fit, building and utilizing resources from the area. The government itself is controlled via its playerbase. As of the campaign’s launch, there were around 400 players. With more this may become an even larger aspect of play. The quest players embark on in Ascent is full of combat, although of course you can instead focus on research, development, and exploration if you wish.

Unlike a lot of these pie in the sky space MMOs that land on crowdfunding sites, Ascent is already playable and you can check out the demo for free. Of course, the current state it’s in is what the team hopes to improve. They’re looking to spruce up game graphics by hiring a graphics artist which is where most of the $35,000 AUD (about $30,600) will go. Although their fanbase is small, it’s apparently very endeared with this title. After very little time on Kickstarter at all Ascent: The Space Game has already raised half their goal amount.
