There are a heck of a lot of horror games out there. You can find games that take place in a scary mansion, boat, museum, and so much more. Even enemies get a huge degree of variety with zombies, vampires, cult members, and more just to name a few. But GORGE, a horror RPG now on Kickstarter, has something unique about it. One of the main themes cited as running through its core is food. Yes, food. All told, food can be pretty scary at times but let’s delve into why specifically GORGE’s storyline demands it.
You play as Etoile who is the daughter of a lumberjack. One day, while browsing the local bakery, something happens. Without any explanation the world around her is changed to an alternate version of her town. Now, instead of seeing happy townsfolk, Etoile is greeted by frightful spirits. It appears they are hungry – for her. As Etiole you must explore the landscape, solve puzzles, hide, and fight to leave this strange place. So far the screenshots and gameplay video definitely give off a creepy vibe, despite the pixel art aesthetic.
Developer Cecilia Bishton even names some of her game-based inspirations: Ao Oni, ib, The Witch’s House. As an indie horror fan, hearing all these great games referenced is exciting. It’s not just that, of course, but that she does seem to have channeled how to convey horror thanks in part to playing some excellent genre titles. If you’d like to pledge toward GORGE’s $4,000 goal (and nab the game in the process) then tiers from $10 and up are for you.
