Haze Walker, a Metroidvania for WII U, PS3, PS4, Mac, and Windows.

As a Wii U owner, it’s always a bit disappointing to see how many games arrive on Kickstarter with Wii U versions as a distant stretch goal (if the console is given any attention at all!). That’s why any new project with Wii U at the forefront is immediately exciting to me. Hazewalker is one of these games – but don’t worry, PC (Windows, Mac, and Linux) is also included!

Enough of that, let’s dig into what Hazewalker is all about. It’s described as a 2.5D Metroidvania where the protagonist Falken must use a very special power to save your hometown. They are cursed (or blessed?) with Haze, an ancient ability that allows their body to turn into mist. As you might expect, such a power is of tremendous use. Players can dissipate and float to the other side of an enemy, for example, or even make their way through tiny crevices. Metroidvanias are known for giving players cool new weapons and powers, but I don’t think something quite like this has ever existed before. Another way that developer TheoryForm Games sets Hazewalker apart is thanks to the visuals. Nope, there’s no pixel art here! Instead they’ve gone for a painterly look which helps give the game a more “handcrafted” look.

Wii U owners would likely flock to Hazewalker because Nintendo consoles have a long history of Metroidvania classics. However, for them to be able to play this it will actually have to reach its Kickstarter funding goal! $100,000 is doable but not if the word doesn’t get out. Give the demo a try and see if Hazewalker is something you’d like to play.
