Some adventure games are serious looks into the human condition. Some adventure games are pure comedies that’ll leave you in stitches. Some adventure games are just full of beautiful landscapes that make you want to explore every nook and cranny. And then you have the adventure games that can best be described as…weird. We Need a Hero falls squarely in the latter category. Honestly, I’m not sure quite what to classify this one as other than weird. Still, it sounds like my kind of game.

We Need a Hero

In We Need a Hero apparently some mad scientist dude accidentally dumps some toxic waste into the sewer system mutating pretty much everyone in the city. Enter Jacky, a plumber that spends a lot of his free time playing games. And spends a lot of his free brain cells wondering if there was more to his life than scrubbing out toilets. Yes, this dimwitted plunger jockey may not be the hero the city deserves but he might be the one it needs. Or something like that.

We Need a Hero

That alone is not what makes We Need a Hero weird in my playbook. I’ve backed and played many a strange and crazy adventure game before so this is nothing new to me. It’s the artwork that creeps me out. But in a good way. My first reaction was that it could have been something done by the creators of Ren & Stimpy, which was a show that I really enjoyed watching when I was younger. Still, between the graphics and the crazy characters it does almost scream WEIRD! I know I used that word a lot in this article but that’s really the best way to describe it.

And, because I just can’t keep myself from making a bad joke from the ’80s, Jacky sure ain’t the hero Bonnie Tyler was singing about.
