With the glut of pixel-centric, retro-inspired games that have been released/announced in the last 4-5 years, it’s nice to see something that hearkens back to a bygone era, but expands on the formula in a way that doesn’t cause eyestrain.
So imagine my surprise when I came across Dystoria, a colorful, fast-paced 6-axis space shooter that hearkens back to vector arcade games like Asteroids and Battlezone. Throw in some retro synthwave music, and it’s almost like getting slapped by Johnny Five while cruising around in your Delorean.
The good-natured duo that comprises Tri-Coastal Games launched their Dystoria Kickstarter on May 3rd, 2016, and will hit old school arcade fiends like myself right in the retro feels.
Dystoria is proof that “retro-inspired” is not married to pixel art, and can span across multiple genres and styles. Just compare legendary arcade titles like Dragon’s Lair and Tempest.
Will Dystoria usher in a new era?
