I’m a fan of adventurey type games that take something else that I love and wrap it into a gaming genre that I love. In the case of The Captain, its tagline of “This is not just a regular point-and-click adventure game” made me want to take a closer look. And while I’m still on the fence about backing it there is something there that has piqued my interest. And it’s not just the parallels to classic sci-fi franchises like Star Trek (in particular the Voyager series).

In a nutshell, The Captain is about a family man stranded far from home and it’s up to him to bring his ship as safely and quickly as possible back to where he once was. The basic plot aside, it’s the merging of two almost disparate genres that has made me want to keep an eye on this one. There is very little about either the adventure or strategy elements in the pitch, which is a shame as I’d love to know more about both. I’d also love to know how both play styles work together.

All that said, at least I can still take a closer look “under the hood”, as it were, with the provided demo. Which should answer some of my nagging questions about how The Captain plays out. My only problem is that otherwise all I have to go by is a couple short bullet lists that tell me little. The need to download something to get a better feel for how it all works is a pet peeve of mine when it is just as easy to provide an extended explanation of gameplay as it is to toss up a link to a playable slice of the game.
