Crowdfunded survival sim, The Long Dark is about to get even darker. Hinterland Studio announced their first in-game Halloween event, Four Days of Night. Beginning on Friday, October 28th at 10am PDT the sun will not rise in-game. Instead players must endure four days of perpetual darkness until the sun returns on Tuesday, November 1st at 10am PDT.
Hinterland had marked previous holidays with special Start screens, but this will be their first experimental foray into changing the gameplay experience. To combat the total darkness, light sources will last twice as long. Also, survivors can locate special pumpkin pies with warming and wildlife deterrent capabilities as well as high-calorie snacks from candy bowls.
No Sleeping Tight
Of course, it’s not all fun and games since The Long Dark is first and foremost about survival. Nights are even more dangerous now thanks to the addition of demon wolves. It might be tempting for players to just stock up at a cabin and wait the event out, but then they will miss their chance at rare loot drops marked by Jack-o’-lanterns.
The downside to all the fun and festivities is that the Halloween gameplay changes will apply to all in-progress sandbox and challenge games during the event. Players who are worried about the impact this would have on their current playthroughs are encouraged to start new sandbox sessions before participating.
The Long Dark is available on Steam through Early Access for $19.99. I haven’t played since before they added the challenge modes. Might have to jump on later and start stocking up for the coming darkness.
The event is over, but you can still find the pies and loot scattered around. No idea what I’m going to do with all these candy bars.
