Video games have brought us nearly infinite experiences and stories over the years. More recently, we’ve even seen titles that attempt to get players pushing the narrative in different directions via choices made in said games. However, have we seen games that ask you to tell the story yourself? Elegy for a Dead World hopes to turn its players into writers as they create a storyline while exploring vast, beautiful landscapes.
How does this work? Well, you explore a now-dead civilization and as you explore a prompt will appear at the bottom of the screen. These will start you off with an idea, allowing players to write about the area, its history, the character’s feelings, or anything else. Since the title is so focused on user-created narrative players are also able to write free-form at any point. “Puzzles” are said to take the form of new revelations in the world. As such, these may force you to reconsider the storyline you’ve built and figure out how to absorb this information into it.
Elegy for a Dead World has very few contemporaries with which to relate it to. The closest I could come up with was Sleep is Death, but even then, that is more of a cooperative storytelling play. Once players have written their stories they can then share them via the Steam Workshop, create a digital (and shareable) book, or actually buy their own printed book. Dejobaan Games are asking for $48,000 to crowdfund their game via Kickstarter. If it succeeds, PC players on Windows, Mac, and Linux machines will be able to enjoy Elegy for a Dead World’s incredibly unique play style.
