I’ve seen enough Kickstarter scams to tell you that Dungeon Panic! is actually on hiatus. It’s not some scam, believe it or not, although many many times when a game goes on hiatus, it is. Why do I think that this is a legitimate delay? Well, first of all, the team hasn’t just vanished into thin air. That almost always happens when a team just takes the money and runs off, but this time around, we’ve been given a detailed and reasonable explanation for the game’s halted development. Does that mean people are going to get mad over the $13,024 that went to the game’s prompt completion? Absolutely.
Half of the staff is working on some web comic or another right now, and while that’s partially responsible for this big delay, it’s not what’s preventing the game from being completed. The lead developer of the project is currently between jobs, and moving to a new location entirely for his new one, and with small teams (like this game’s team of only three people), one person being gone is a completely legitimate reason for absolutely everything to grind to a halt.
The team led by Josh Lesnick plans to have production back underway as soon as possible, and in this case, bad news is infinitely better than no news at all. While the comments section is a raging inferno of entitled pledgers, we have absolutely no reason to believe that this project isn’t going to meet its development goals. It’ll just take a little longer, says the developers, and until we have any reason to believe this is a scam, we should treat it as a delay – not a robbery.
