There are many resources and workshops out there to get children more involved with both game design and the wonders of programming, but there are very few games that challenge them to program as they play a game. Jaxi: The Robot, created by game developer and software engineer Adam Dunn, is a JavaScript-based puzzle game that challenges the player to code in JavaScript to control Jaxi’s movements and solve any problems.
This idea came after learning more of his daughter’s interests and wanting to create a way to encourage little girls (and children altogether) to explore different ways of thinking and expand their realm of learning a bit.
With Jaxi: The Robot, that’s just what it did.
After making a small demo and testing it out on the children of his family, it was an absolute success. It is then that Adam decided to make it a full-fledged project.
In Jaxi: The Robot, players play as Jaxi, a pink misfit robot produced by BlueBot International, a factory that strictly creates blue robots. Jaxi is immediately considered an outcast and must find a way to prove her quality is no different than the blues’. To navigate around and solve puzzles with Jaxi, players must write in JavaScript every little thing they want her to do, teaching them the language along the way.
Creating this game requires some help, though, and to pay for the development team and music of Jaxi: The Robot, Adam has turned to Kickstarter for $21K. Adam intends to release Jaxi: The Robot on Windows, Mac, and Linux – a release date hasn’t been mentioned yet. A demo of Jaxi: The Robot is available on the Kickstarter page.
