Did you ever stumble across a game by the name of Escape from 26? After creating that free web game, developer Big Loop Studios quickly discovered that people really enjoyed it. The only issue, it seemed, was that their product was over too soon. The team decided to make a sequel which expands upon the original in every way. That game is DreamCage 28 and is currently on Kickstarter.
What’s with the name DreamCage 28? Well, the entire game world takes place within a surreal bird cage. Inside is a tiny town filled with residents, puzzles, and mystery. Players navigate the world with a point and click interface and collect objects to solve puzzles with as well as talk to the natives. Sure, that’s immensely typical of the adventure genre, but the visuals definitely stand out. The land inside this strange bird cage definitely manages to feel both recognizable and alien. Everything seems a bit rusted and ancient. If this Kickstarter raises enough funds we’ll get some backstory as to who owned the cage, the protagonist’s history, and the like.
Although there’s no demo available on the campaign page, interested parties simply need to check out Escape from 26 to get a feel for what the developers are creating next. DreamCage 28 needs $10,000 to succeed. As of right now they’re already 10% there. You can vote for the game over on Steam Greenlight. DreamCage 28 is planned for release on Windows and Mac computers as well as Android and iOS.

There’s something so wonerfull nineties about this! This is like… I dunno; “9 (The Last Resort)” and “Twinsen’s Odyssey (Little Big Adventure)” mixed together. I miss that kind of “We can do anything!”-attitude that let to such surreal games. I’ll gladly throw a few bucks at this project. Love finding stuff like this via this site.
If only games like 9 made a comeback of sorts via Steam, I wouldn’t even mind the 90’s graphics.
As someone posted in a blog somewhere, it’s such a pity we don’t have a movie-like Criterion collection of this hidden but forgotten gems they wouldn’t sadly be doomed as they are now to disappear for good. 🙁
