Are you the kind of person who thrives off obscene levels of difficulty in games? Do you play titles in the survival genre and complain that they’re too easy? If so, then take a look at Outward. Deemed “The Adventurer Life Sim” by its developer Nine Dots Canada the game is an imminently challenging, realistic action RPG with survival elements. You do not begin the game weak and grow to godly status like occurs in The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim (and most others). Instead, you just do your best to live out day after day as an adventurer in a massive, dangerous continent.
Outward oscillates between more action-packed segments and self survival. For example, you’ll go out and engage in battles to complete quests but at the end of the day still have to eat and sleep somewhere. Quest implementation is also different from most games in that NPCs will not wait around forever. Instead, quests are given a time frame and if you’re not there when it occurs then it’s time to move onto the next. Survival, too, is given a more realistic edge. One example by the developers was that water needs to be boiled first to ensure what you collected is safe to drink. Finally, Outward is intended as a co-op experience (either locally or online).
A game with so much potential doesn’t come cheap. The team has asked for approximately $120,062 (converted from CAD $) on Kickstarter. Outward is planned for a PC release. They’ve not launched a Steam Greenlight campaign yet, but one is probably on the way.
