It’s hard to say what it is about games dealing with space combat that draw so much attention, but we rarely go a month without seeing one on Kickstarter. The funny thing is, everyone seems to be creating their own distinct iterations of the massive genre as well, rather than just copying an established formula. Project Orion is the latest crowdfunding endeavor which comes to us from Raven Sword Industries. This indie outfit is asking for just about $6,200 (converted from Canadian dollars) to fund their project. So, let’s see what this one has to offer.

As you might expect, there are things like dynamically changing environments, damage modeling for realistic destruction, and a broad array of customization for ship pilots. To me, what really brings a cool aspect to Project Orion is the energy routing feature. Okay, it might not be brand new, but personally it is a great way to add more fast-paced action to strategy titles which can sometimes grow a bit stale. What this does is allow players to route power between different aspects of their ship as needed. So, for example, if you’re taking heavy damage you may want to max up shields. Or, maybe you’ll choose to go a risky route and turn shields off entirely to speed away.

When players are given such freedom in regards to combat, and customization of their ship, it just sounds like a great way to get people invested. If you’d like to support the potential release of Project Orion on Steam then consider giving the game an upvote on Greenlight.
